GOYA
"The Third of May"
and Notes on the Horror of Existence
Lecture by Jonathan Hirschfeld and Ilya Gefter
from the series of online seminars "Masterworks"
The lecture explores Goya’s artistic legacy and situates him at the pivotal point: as the last of the Old Masters and the first Modernist painter. We present and analyze his celebrated masterpiece The Third of May, alongside several prints from The Disasters of War and the Black Paintings. Goya, a child of the Enlightenment, will be shown as an artist who became disillusioned with its promise.
